Workday line 34: Fügnerova - Ruprechtice sídliště - Pavlovice Letná - Růžodol I - Průmyslová zóna Jih

ROUTE FUNCTION
Line 34 carries employees of the Southern Industrial Zone companies to and from work during shift changes around 6 a.m., 2 p.m., 6 p.m. and 10 p.m. By its character it could be considered a circular line, as it collects passengers from the railway station and from the Růžodol, Pavlovice and Ruprechtice estates. On some sections it can also serve as a supplement to lines 25 and 14 and as a connection of Pavlovice and Ruprechtice with the railway station, which no other line offers. Since 2019 the line has been operated mostly by articulated buses.
  • 1 May 2000: the first creation of a line with the number 34, as an attempt at a circular "shopping" line aiming to bring passengers to the recently completed first Liberec supermarket, Hypernova. The route is Hypernova - Rochlice - Zelené Údolí - Broumovská - Šaldovo nám. - Fügnerova - Nádraží - Americká - Hypernova. In the opposite direction line 35 was put into operation.
  • 3 September 2001: a long-term diversion along Americká street all the way to Hanychovská and then along the tram tracks, due to the dilapidated state of the bridge over the railway.
  • 1 January 2002: the Kavkazská stop was put into operation.
  • 1 September 2003: the diversion ends, the line returns to its route.
  • 1 September 2004: the line was abolished on the basis of passenger surveys. Only line 35 remains, newly run on the Fügnerova – Zelené Údolí – Hypernova section and back. Line 34 on the Fügnerova – Americká – Hypernova section is entirely replaced by extended line 22 services to Hypernova.
  • 1 September 2006: a new line 34 is created, already on today's route, that is, FÜGNEROVA - Ruprechtice sídliště - PAVLOVICE LETNÁ - Růžodol I - NÁDRAŽÍ - PRŮMYSLOVÁ ZÓNA JIH. It begins as three services in the outbound direction for shift changes and three services back after the change. These replaced the original extended line 31 services. The line caught on very well — in 2012 an afternoon reinforcement service from Pavlovice was added, and a year later evening and weekend services were added. Since 2018 most services are operated by articulated buses.

With line 34 it depends a great deal on which service it is — whether it runs to/from the morning, afternoon or night shift. The service for the morning shift still travels through a fairly calm city that is only just waking up; for the afternoon shift it travels through a fairly active city preparing for the afternoon peak; and finally for the night shift the city is calm again. The last-named can be seen in the following footage from summer.

FÜGNEROVA - PRŮMYSLOVÁ ZÓNA JIH

On the way back it matters exactly the same. If we are coming from the night shift, the city is already becoming fairly active, but still quite passable. The worst is the journey from the morning shift during the beginning of the afternoon peak. Jams in the industrial zone area, in the viaduct area, then in the Růžodol and Pavlovice areas and finally the centre — all this can create a delay of tens of minutes. The journey from the afternoon shift, by contrast, is a ride through an almost dead city. In the footage we see the most demanding service, which could rather be called 'an ordeal'. It was filmed during the Friday afternoon peak, when the situation tends to be at its worst. The resulting delay of the service was 19 minutes, but it must be said that the passage through the viaduct, Růžodol and the centre was still quite good. The service runs along a long-term diversion that avoids the road no. 35 through route.
